You will be asked a combination of between 1 and 5 of the following safety and maintenance questions prior to your module 2 test. The questions on bike maintenance are SHOW or TELL questions, you will not be asked to actually perform any maintenence, just to have an understanding of the very basics, and we will go through these questions with you prior to test:

Adjustments which may be necessary when carrying a pillion are:
1:Stiffen rear suspension – see owners manual.
2:Increase rear tyre pressure – see owners manual.
3:Adjust mirrors.
4:Adjust headlamp.

Effects of carrying a pillion passenger may be: (Weight on the back makes the front lighter!)
1:Acceleration slower due to weight.
2:-Braking slower due to extra weight.
3:Control especially on corners will be more difficult.
4:Slow speed manoeuvring becomes more difficult.

The legal requirements for carrying a pillion are:
1:Rider must have full motorbike licence.
2:Rider & pillion must wear an approved helmet & they must be properly fastened.
3:Motorbike is made to carry pillions: 2x Seats & footrests which pillion must reach.

Advice you would give to the pillion:
1:Wear approved helmet.
2:Wear protective/waterproof clothing.
3:Sit still & don’t fidget.
4:Lean with the bike around corners & bends.
5:Keep feet on footrests at all times.
6:Hold on to either rider or grab rail/handles if fitted.
7:Don’t signal for the rider.

What can cause of loss of balance:
1:Windy conditions / Poor road surface
2:Poor tyre pressures / suspension adjustment.
3:Luggage not evenly distributed.
4:Consumption of alcohol / drugs.

OILTELL ME where you would check the engine oil level and how would you check the engine has sufficient oil:
Bike should be upright on a level surface. For sight glass check through glass, oil level should be between min/max. For bikes with a dipstick: remove, wipe, return & remove again to check oil level is between min/max.
Horn: SHOW ME how you would check the horn is working (off road only:)

Use horn switch – turn on ignition if necessary.

Brake Fluid: TELL ME where the brake fluid reservoirs are and tell me how you check you have a safe level of hydraulic fluid:

Identify reservoir and check level against markings (note bike is upright  and level)

Lights:  TELL ME how you would check the lights and reflectors are clean and working:

Explain the lights come on automatically when you turn on the ignition and you would visually inspect they and the reflectors are clean and working by checking each one individually.

Brake Lights: SHOW ME how you would check the brake lights work:

Operate brake and place one hand over light or use reflection in window/garage door etc.

Chain: TELL ME how you would check the chain condition:

Place on paddock stand/centre stand or moving bike manually, visually check for wear and condition as well as lubrication. Using the owners manual/handbook for measurements and method, check the tension and rear wheel alignment . Tension must be adjusted as per owners manual.

Steering: SHOW ME what checks you would make on the steering movement prior to use:

Move handlebars full lock both ways making sure there are no cables stretched, trapped or pinched and no snagging between moving and fixed parts. There should be no grinding/crunching noises.

Tyres: TELL ME how you check your tyres to ensure they are correctly inflated/have sufficient tread/and they are in a roadworthy & safe condition: Check pressure as per manual using reliable gauge/tread must be 1mm deep all the way round and ¾ across the breadth/visually check for lumps, bulges, cracks, tears and objects in tyre.

Front Brake: SHOW ME How do you check the front brake works:

Wheel bike forward and apply front brake.

Brakes: SHOW ME how to check the operation of the brakes:

Apply pressure to each brake individually co be sure they work, and checking for excessive travel on the lever / pedal, also for unusual play or sponginess.

Engine Cut Out switch: SHOW ME how you check the engine cut out switch works:

While engine runs operate the switch.

Headlight: SHOW ME how you switch from main to dipped beam:

Operate switch with ignition/engine on if necessary. Check main beam warning light works and the light dips using hand in front of light.
